It is official: the largest on-demand delivery platform in the U.S. is joining forces with the world’s largest autonomous drone delivery company. Zipline and Uber Technologies announced on Monday a major strategic partnership aimed at bringing instant aerial deliveries to millions of households across America.
As part of the deal, Uber Eats customers will soon be able to order food, snacks, and daily essentials delivered directly to their backyards via Zipline’s quiet, autonomous drones in just 5 to 10 minutes. Initial flights will launch later this year in existing Zipline markets such as the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston metroplexes. Eventually, they’ll expand into dozens of major U.S. cities.
On top of the operational partnership is the financial backing: Uber is making a direct strategic investment in Zipline, though it’s unclear exactly how much. Though, it seems likely this could be the biggest drone delivery deal ever announced.
And here’s perhaps the most compelling line for all of us who want a drone to deliver food to our own homes: the two companies together have set an ambitious goal to reach one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029.
Why this Uber-Zipline partnership matters
On the surface, a 1-million-deliveries-a-day goal sounds like classic Silicon Valley hyperbole (I still haven’t forgotten Jeff Bezos’s promise in 2013 that we would have Amazon drone delivery to people’s homes within five yeas).
But here’s why that goal might actually work:
1. Delivery platforms are choosing integration over building from scratch
Longtime readers of The Drone Girl might remember that Uber once sought to build its own hardware ecosystem and at one point was hiring its own drone pilots on staff. Through its legacy Uber Elevate division, the company spent years trying to design proprietary aerial hardware and test fast-food drone deliveries. Uber eventually spun off Elevate to Joby Aviation and pivoted away from internal aircraft manufacturing.
By partnering with Zipline (and making strategic investments in established drone operators like Flytrex), Uber is proving that gig-economy giants no longer want to be drone manufacturers. Instead, it makes sense for them to power the universal software layer that aggregates orders, leaving complex airframe design and FAA Part 135 air carrier certifications to specialized robotics companies.
2. Zipline’s Platform 2 (P2) could work better for suburban America
Zipline built its reputation on long-range, fixed-wing “Platform 1” (P1) drones that drop medical supplies via parachute over rural areas mostly in Africa But parachuting a burrito into a suburban backyard doesn’t work.
This Uber Eats integration is powered by Zipline’s Platform 2 (P2) ecosystem. P2 aircraft hover silently at 300 feet while lowering a small, tethered “delivery droid” down to a precise 3-foot target on the ground. Because the main aircraft stays high in the air and doesn’t buzz near people or pets, it bypasses noise complaints and safety issues around coming into too close contact with the drone, two of the biggest hurdles facing residential drone delivery.
3. “Beyond Visual Line of Sight” (BVLOS) is finally reaching commercial scale
For years, the drone delivery sector has been bogged down not so much by tech, but rater by regulatory gridlock. Because of rules that prevent drones from flying beyond line of site in the U.S. without an exemption, many flights have been forced to fly short distances with human visual observers standing on ground corners.
Much of those challenges have been solved — or are close to being solved. In recent years, the FAA has granted key summary approvals for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights without visual observers to leaders like Zipline, Wing, and Flytrex. And this month last year, the U.S. released its proposed rule to enable routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations.
Those regulations in place should finally allow operators to finally achieve the unit economics required for high-volume commercial scaling.
The road to 2029
Reaching 1 million daily flights in three years is a huge goal. Even beyond FAA gridloks, Zipline and Uber will still have to navigate localized city zoning, community noise feedback and local merchant onboarding as they expand from Texas hubs into dozens of new metropolitan areas.
However, with Uber’s massive customer distribution engine backing Zipline’s proven flight safety record — which boasts over 135 million autonomous commercial miles flown — this is one I’m watching.
