Pikachu Weekend gets 3x drone light show

Here’s an absolutely adorable drone light show that you can relive online even if you didn’t catch it at all in-person: a Pokemon themed show. Pikachu Weekend featured all sorts of Pokemon-themed festivities, but perhaps the highlight was a drone light show.

Watch a clip of the drone light show from Pikachu Weekend here:

The show performed three times in one weekend in the skies above Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, the iconic resort. For the show, drones flew in formations including Pikachu traveling by jet and drones in the shape of Corsola, which is a small, pink, roundish Anthozoan Pokémon.

It was all held as part of Pokemon Air Adventures, which is an initiative by The Pokémon Company to give back to affected travel industries hit by the pandemic. Besides the Pikachu Night Show at Marina Bay, Pokemon fans in Singapore were treated to “POKÉGENIC,” which was an art display of photogenic picture spots sprinkled throughout Gardens by the Bay.

There was also a special Pokémon GO Safari Zone Singapore event, where players were likely to encounter Maractus, which is usually only found in certain regions. Pokémon Go is an augmented reality mobile game that launched in 2016 where players use their GPS-enabled mobile device to locate, capture, train, and battle virtual Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player’s real-world location. It was also the first time in Pokémon GO that players might find Shiny Purrloin.

And even though Pokémon Go is all about augmented reality, there were some physical creatures to find, too. At night, the Pokémon friends could be spotted against the lighted Supertrees and luminaire in the Gardens by the Bay.

The show was put on by the team at SKYMAGIC, which is a Singapore-based drone light show company. SKYMAGIC is the team behind other major productions including London’s 2022 New Year’s Eve Show, and a public show to celebrate the Venice Biennale.

The company is cofounded by Hitomi Uematsu, who was named a winner in the 2019 Women to Watch in UAS awards put n by Women and Drones.

This is certainly shaping up to be the year of drone light shows. Companies like Uematsu’s SKYMAGIC are exploding in popularity for their drone light shows around the world. Perhaps most notably is the Disneyland Paris Marvel drone show, which kicked off in January 2023 at Walt Disney Studios Park to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Disneyland Paris.
