The team over at DJI announced its speaker lineup for AirWorks 2022, its annual, enterprise conference. And I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be amongst this year’s lineup of stellar presenters.
The conference is designed for people who work on the commercial side of drones, in industries such as AEC and surveying, energy, agriculture , public safety and infrastructure. My workshop will be industry-agnostic, as it’s designed for absolutely anyone looking to grow their drone business (or the drone side of another business).
It’s called, “How To Pitch Your Drone Business To The Press.” In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to get better press coverage — whether it’s via a niche blog or a major media outlet — for your drone business or brand. After all, as a member of the press myself, I get a lot of pitches — both good and bad.
You’ll learn a hefty list of buzzwords to avoid, you’ll undergo an exercise for crafting the ultimate elevator pitch, you’ll receive tips for composing your subject line (and yes, your subject line can often matter more than the press release or body of the email!), and receive some insider suggestions to make sure journalists actually cover your story.
Who is my DJI AirWorks talk for?
This talk is excellent for any small business owner looking to get press coverage for their business, but it goes beyond that. Learning how to pitch to press is a valuable skill — even if you never talk to pitch.
The skills transfer to other types of pitching — pitching to investors. Maybe it’s just pitching an idea you have to your boss, such as if you work in a company that does not currently use drones, but you’re looking to incorporate them.
This presentation is relevant for anyone launching a drone startup, trying to build up a personal brand, or trying to generate interest in a big drone company.
While I run The Drone Girl as a blog focused on this industry, my other journalism experience includes a past life as a reporter for The New York Times, The Orange County Register and MarketWatch. I currently also write about travel and finance for NerdWallet, where my content ultimately gets published in The Washington Post, Yahoo Finance and more. I’ve received thousands of pitches in my lifetime — and dozens of pitches per day — so I know what goes into a good pitch if you’re seeking media coverage.
DJI AirWorks 2022: when, where — and all the important other details
DJI AirWorks 2022 is set for Monday, Oct. 10 through Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022 at the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Expect it to be among the biggest drone events of this year.
My workshop on pitching your drone business: My specific talk is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m. and will last 45 minutes. Expect to find me in Breakout Room C.
The hotel: The conference organizers have secured a room block with rates starting at $168 per night plus tax, though there are many other ways to save on a trip to Vegas including booking your Vegas trip on points and miles.
Since The Mirage sits within the MGM Resorts portfolio, you’re eligible to earn MGM Rewards. If you have World of Hyatt elite status, you’re in luck; Not only can you book your MGM stay on Hyatt points, but your Hyatt status matches with MGM Rewards status. That means Hyatt high-rollers may be entitled to other benefits like waived resort fees, expedited lines and complimentary self-parking.
Cost and inclusions: As far as tickets to conference itself, they cost $299 and include full access to the entire conference, including keynote speeches, demos and workshops like mine. It also gets you into the Welcome Reception, which includes complimentary drinks and appetizers on Monday night, plus complimentary breakfast and lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s effectively five meals worth — which is almost an easy way to justify conference costs right there.
Of course, don’t pass up the food in Vegas. When I’m not at AirWorks, you’ll likely find me at Best Friend at Park MGM, or at the Hello Kitty Cafe.
