5 reasons the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is way better than the regular iPhone camera alone

The iPhone camera is pretty great these days. Despite having a degree in photojournalism where I trained on mirrorless and digital SLR cameras (and I do still love my trusty Canon 5D Mark ii, which I’ve had since college), I mostly find myself filming my footage taking on the ground with an iPhone camera.

The image quality on the latest iPhone models is just incredible, and I’ve constantly got my iPhone in my hand anyway. It just makes little sense to have a separate camera in most aspects of my daily life. That said, I’m still always looking for a way to distinguish my iPhone videography from that of everyone else.

And that’s where the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 comes into play. The company most famous for its drones this fall released the DJI Osmo Mobile 6, which is a palm-sized, portable device designed to level up videos shot on smartphones — iPhone or otherwise. Consider it a combination selfie stick, handheld tripod and gimbal mount for your smartphone.

1. The gimbal keeps your footage way more stable

Most smartphone makers have made recent strides lately to better stabilize footage. Especially when running or jumping, footage is understandably shaky, though recent developers in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) have tried to mitigate this.

But the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 does one better with an entire 3-axis gimbal. Seen in most DJI drones, the Osmo Mobile 6 takes that silky smooth aesthetic found when your drone glides through the air and brings it to your smartphone footage.

2. ActiveTrack 5.0 brings the latest tracking software to your iPhone

DJI’s ActiveTrack software is used in drones and other cameras, and the new DJI Osmo Mobile 6 features the newest version of ActiveTrack, which is version 5.0. This version includes a neat feature that allows the front camera to track subjects that turn to the side or spin.

Compare that with only using a smartphone, where you’ll have to adjust the composition manually — no automatically tracking of the subject in your intended frame.

3. The extension rod takes the selfie stick and makes it better

Sure, selfie sticks on their own are goofy. They’re an extra accessory to bring that functions as a longer arm, but one that doesn’t work too well given its limited angle and shooting options. But this is a smart selfie stick of sorts. It even turns things up a notch with features like gesture control where — rather than press a button — gestures can provide simple commands like taking a selfie or group photo.

4. Even smarter functions

We mentioned gesture control, but that’s not all. The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 has tons more smart functions including motion lapse, panorama, story mode, landscape mode and portrait orientations. Here’s a quick rundown of some of them:

  • Timelapse: Warp time and space with Timelapse, Motionlapse and Hyperlapse in a single template.
  • DynamicZoom: Move In creates a compressing visual effect, while Move Out mode provides a stretching effect.
  • Gesture Control: Rather than press a button, gestures can provide simple commands like taking a selfie or group photo.
  • Panorama: Three different panorama modes – 3×3, 240°, and CloneMe – help capture landscapes or other unique photo composition types.   
  • Story Mode: Various templates help to combine camera movements, transitions, soundtracks and more in an effort to help you build videos in one tap.

iPhones and some other cameras have some smart functions, like smart HDR 4, true tone flash and portrait lighting. Those are certainly incredible. But pair it with the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 for a super smart combo.

5. The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 edits for you

I’ve saved the best for last, and that’s the top reason I defer to my Osmo Mobile 6 when filming smartphone video: it edits for you. I love shooting footage, but the more of it I have, the more of a pain it is to edit.

Smartphone editing software is downright bad. DJI makes it a lot better. When you use the Osmo Mobile 6, you’ll be able to also edit the footage you shot in app — and by you editing the footage, I mean, robots do most of the work for you — and you simply sign off on it.

The app is incredible thanks to AI-powered scene recognition — automatically pulling out the most interesting moments of your shot.

There are actually a few ways to auto edit footage. DJI Mimo’s app is where you’ll find the ShotGuides feature, which automatically recognizes the scenario and recommends a shot sequence, along with a tutorial on how to achieve it.
