Maybe it’s due to inflation, or perhaps SkyPixel has just gotten bigger and more generous than ever. But in the 8th Annual SkyPixel Photo & Video Contest, we’re getting the biggest prize pool yet. About $143,000 is up for grabs in the 2022 SkyPixel photo contest.
The 8th Annual SkyPixel Photo & Video Contest is run by SkyPixel, which is an online photo community that was established in 2014 and is closely tied to DJI, which is the world’s largest drone maker. This year’s contest opens today and will be accepting entries through Jan. 30, 2023.
The 2022 SkyPixel judging panel includes Claudio Miranda Academy Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, National Geographic’s Anne Farrar, and Phil Pastuhov, who was Director of Cinematography for The Lord of the Rings.
The contest is broken out by photo and video submissions, with four photo categories and six video categories. They are:
2022 Skypixel photo categories:
- Nature
- Architecture
- Portrait
- Sports
All photos must be shot on a drone (though it doesn’t necessarily have to be a DJI drone), and each image must be at least 3 MB with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. EXIF data should be retained.
2022 Skypixel video categories:
- Nature
- City
- Travel
- Sports
- Story
- Vertical
All videos submitted must not exceed five minutes in length. The entry must contain at least 30 seconds of aerial footage.
This year’s contest also includes a theme, which is dubbed “The Story Behind.” Given the theme, participants will be encouraged to convey a message and meaning in their video or photo submission.
Another notably difference in this year’s contest is the vertical theme, presumably inspired by the new DJI Mini 3 Pro drone, which features 90° gimbal rotation. With the gimbal’s ability to rotate, the drone can shoot vertical image, which is pretty common on most forms of social media including TikTok and Instagram reels.

At stake is prizes worth a combined $143,000. There are plenty of chances to win, with 42 awards to be given out. Grand prize winners will each receive the Hasselblad 907X Anniversary Edition Kit, along with a trophy and award certificate. Winners in other categories will receive merchandise including the DJI Mavic 3 drone, the Osmo Action 3 camera, and — for those who have it all — DJI Credit to purchase items to come (or perhaps other merch they don’t already have).
