Okay, you probably don’t need to know ALL of these drone companies, but only because there are seriously so many. But have a glance at this 2022 drone market map, and you’ll understand that the drone industry has spread far and wide.
The annual(ish) 2022 Drone Market Map comes courtesy of Drone Industry Insights, a German-based drone analytics group behind a bunch of other key reports and datasets, including the annual Drone Industry Barometer report. And just this month, DII put out a fresh edition of one of its most popular and highly-coveted free, (mostly) annual infographics: the 2022 Drone Market Map.
Here’s the big old version, which you can download in full from DII here:
It highlights among the biggest stakeholders and influencers in the drone industry. And while it doesn’t list every single drone company out there in the world (there are so many, and many more come and go), this year’s annual map features an incredible 1,076 drone companies — 379 of which weren’t in the 2019 edition.
Among some standout tidbits on this year’s 2022 Drone Market Map:
- This year’s map has two new segments: Vertiports and Communication in hardware.
- There are 1,076 drone companies feature on this year’s map. 379 of them are on the map for the first time this year.
- Despite all the new additions, 251 companies were actually removed from the 2019 version (reasons including mergers, going out of business, etc.)
- Given the additions and removals, this year’s map has 128 new companies listed on it.
- 49.5% of companies on the map are drone hardware manufacturers.
- 37.6% of companies on the map are drone service providers.
- 12.9% of companies on the map are drone software manufacturers.
The map has a lot of company names on there, but they’re organized in a pretty incredible way here. The companies on the map are in alphabetical order for their respective market segment. The overall map has three major categories: hardware (left), software (center) and services (right). But even within that are a number of subcategories.
Hardware subcategories include drone-in-a-box, cameras, passenger drones, components, counter-drone solutions and delivery systems, to name a few.
Software companies include those broken down by UTM services, data analytics, open-source infrastructure, SDK, fleet and operation management, and more.
The services category is perhaps the most varied, with types of services ranging from drone service providers who actually fly the drones for you, to training companies, maintenance providers, suppliers, retailers, conferences and event planners. There’s even a subcategory for media, which does, in fact, feature yours truly, The Drone Girl.
Along with releasing the map, DII also shared some interesting regional stats.
- 40.3% of companies on the map are headquartered in Europe.
- 35.8% of companies on the map are headquartered in North America.
- 11.6% of companies on the map are headquartered in Asia.
But while most of the drone companies are in Europe as far as a continental breakdown goes, the U.S. wins in terms of breakdown by country.
- 31.3% of companies on the map are headquartered in the United States. You can learn more about American drone companies here.
- 7.3% of companies on the map are headquartered in the United Kingdom.
- 6.6% of companies on the map are headquartered in Germany.
- 4.7% of companies on the map are headquartered in France.
- 4.7% of companies on the map are headquartered in Switzerland.
And there’s even a more granular breakdown by city. The most popular cities for drone companies are:
- London (25 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- San Francisco (20 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- Shenzhen (15 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- Tokyo (14 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- Zurich (12 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- Berlin (12 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
- Hamburg (12 drone companies on the map are headquartered there)
You can download the full PDF of the map for yourself directly from Drone Industry Insights here. DII also has compiled an accompany Drone Company Database 2022 which breaks out companies by region or city, and also includes contact information for many of those companies, though that’s going to cost you a hefty €1,199.
